Overview

Fixtures that hold dimensions shift after shift

A welding fixture has three jobs: locate every component to the drawing datums, hold it against weld distortion, and let the operator or robot load, weld and unload quickly. Fixtures designed only as clamps on a table pass the first sample and then drift as locators wear and parts vary.

We start with the datum scheme on your drawing — the 3-2-1 location principle, critical dimensions and the weld sequence. Locators, clamps and supports are placed to control those dimensions, with adjustment and wear parts designed in, so the fixture can be re-certified rather than rebuilt.

For robotic cells we design for torch access, cable routing, sensor feedback and spatter protection; for heavy fabrication we add positioners and handling aids. Every fixture is validated with sample parts and a dimensional report.

FAQ

Welding Fixtures & Jigs: common questions

What is the difference between a jig and a fixture?

A fixture locates and holds the part; a jig also guides the tool — for example a drill bush that guides a drill. In welding, 'welding jig' and 'welding fixture' are used interchangeably for devices that locate and clamp parts during welding.

Why do welded parts go out of dimension even with a fixture?

Usual causes are locators not placed on the drawing datums, clamps that let parts move under heat, an uncontrolled weld sequence, or worn locators. We review datum scheme, clamp placement and weld sequence together to fix the root cause.

Do you make fixtures for robotic welding cells?

Yes. Robotic fixtures are designed for torch reach, sensor-based clamp confirmation, spatter protection and quick changeover, and can be supplied with turntables or positioners.

How long does it take to make a welding fixture?

Typically 4–10 weeks from design freeze, depending on size, number of clamps, automation and quantity. Simple manual fixtures can be quicker.

Can you modify existing fixtures for a new variant?

Yes. We assess existing fixtures, re-certify locators and design modifications or change parts so the same base can run the new variant.

Do you supply checking fixtures?

Yes — checking fixtures and go/no-go gauges for profiles, hole positions and critical dimensions, so parts can be verified at the line instead of waiting for the lab.
